Councilmember Cordero elected Chair of OʻahuMPO Policy Board
HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I ̶ Honolulu City Councilmember Radiant Cordero has been elected Chair of the Policy Board of the Oʻahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (O‘ahuMPO). State Rep. Henry Aquino was elected vice chair.
"I am honored to have been elected as Chair of the O‘ahuMPO Policy Board by my colleagues and leaders of transportation in both the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai‘i," Councilmember Cordero said. "I look forward to working with the Policy Board on critical issues that will ensure effective and optimal utilization of all O‘ahu's transportation infrastructure as it supports transit-oriented development, housing, climate resiliency, and more."
O‘ahuMPO facilitates and supports continued cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning processes between the state, county and any other federally funded operators of public transportation. Federal highway and transit laws require urbanized areas with populations greater than 50,000, to designate MPOs as a condition for spending federal highway or transit funds.
Councilmember Cordero was elected Tuesday and succeeds Sen. Sharon Moriwaki, while Rep. Aquino succeeds Councilmember Brandon Elefante as vice chair. Leadership of the O‘ahuMPO Policy Board alternates between elected city councilmembers and state legislators.
“Congratulations to Chair Cordero on being selected as O‘ahuMPO Chair,” said Councilmember and outgoing O‘ahuMPO Vice Chair Brandon Elefante. “Her knowledge of transportation and planning issues will guide her as a leader in this role, to lead the Policy board in achieving its mission for our island community.”
“I want to mahalo Councilmembers Cordero and Elefante for their public service. This is one example of many that demonstrates their dedication to our community,” said Tommy Waters, Chair of the Honolulu City Council. “As the Council continues to support transit-oriented development to spur desperately needed affordable housing, I am confident that Chair Cordero’s leadership for the O‘ahuMPO decision-making body will be meaningful and invaluable.”
The O‘ahuMPO is comprised of a Policy Board, Technical Advisory Committee, Citizen Advisory Committee and staff. The Policy Board is the decision-making body of the O‘ahuMPO. Agencies that implement O‘ahuMPO policies include the City and County of Honolulu
Department of Transportation Services; Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
