Councilmember Matt Weyer Issues Statement on Renaming Waikele Community Park After Dedicated Public Servant Darrell T. Young

HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI - On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the full council will hear Resolution 23-182 relating to Renaming Waikele Community Park after the late Darrell T. Young, a loving husband, and father who dedicated his career to public service in both the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii, as well as serving the Waikele Community.

Darrell T. Young served as Senior Advisor to City Councilmember Nestor Garcia, Deputy Director at the Department of Hawaiian Homelands, Deputy Director at State Department of Transportation Harbors Division, and Administrator at the City and County of Honolulu Department of Community Services.  Darrell also served on the Waikele Community Association Board of Directors since 1996 and was one of the five original members elected to the Board, and was one of the original owners in the Champions subdivision and also sat on the Champions neighborhood committee.

Councilmember Weyer  has issued the following statement on Resolution 23-182:

“Darrell was more than a public servant; he was a pillar of our community, a beacon of dedication and service. His tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the City and County of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii, and most notably, the Waikele Community. Renaming the Waikele Community Park in his honor is a fitting tribute to a man who devoted his life to improving the lives of others. This gesture will ensure that his legacy continues to inspire future generations to serve their communities with the same passion and commitment that Darrell demonstrated throughout his remarkable career.”

Councilmember Weyer represents City Council District 2, which includes Waikele, Village Park, Royal Kunia, Wahiawā, Mokulē‘ia, Waialua, Hale‘iwa, Pūpūkea, Sunset Beach, Kahuku, Lā‘ie, Hau‘ula, Punalu‘u, Kahana, Ka‘a‘awa, Kualoa, Waiāhole, and Kahalu‘u.
