WHEN: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 5:30PM

WHERE: Ka‘ewai Elementary School, 1929 Kamehameha IV Rd.

HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI - Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Representative John Mizuno will be hosting a town hall on May 9, 2023 at 5:30PM with representatives from the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services.

The event will facilitate a community discussion regarding residential street parking in Kalihi Valley and Oʻahu as a whole. In particular, it will discuss Bill 20 (2023), proposed by Councilmembers Dos Santos-Tam and Radiant Cordero, which amends the City and County of Honolulu’s Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ) program.

Honolulu’s first RPZ was established in three neighborhoods in Kalihi Valley in 2017 as a temporary pilot program, covering the Wilson Tract neighborhood, the Kula Kolea neighborhood, and the ʻAoʻao/Kono Street neighborhood. More than five years later, the program is still temporary. Bill 20 would change this - making the three temporary restricted parking zones permanent. It would also amend the current RPZ law to make it easier to establish restricted parking zones islandwide.

“Kalihi Valley residents have waited far too long for a permanent solution to their parking issues. Bill 20 gives them that solution,” said Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam. “The bill also makes it easier for communities islandwide to improve their parking situations, including at major tourist destinations like Lanikai and the North Shore. I look forward to hearing a diverse set of community perspectives as we continue to shape and improve this legislation.”

“The RPZ program took years of community input, and neighbors in Kalihi Valley look forward to making it permanent through Bill 20. Our district is the only one with RPZs currently in place to ensure adequate parking, and it has also helped to reduce crime. We are excited to welcome neighbors to Tuesday’s community meeting to get even more feedback,” said State Rep. John Mizuno.

The town hall will be held in the cafeteria at Kaʻewai Elementary School, 1929 Kamehameha IV Rd, Honolulu, HI 96819.

Dos Santos-Tam represents City Council District 6, which spans from Kakaʻako to Kalihi, and includes portions of Kakaʻako, Chinatown, Downtown, Punchbowl, Papakōlea, Pauoa Valley, Nu‘uanu, Iwilei, Liliha, ‘Ālewa Heights, Kalihi and Kalihi Valley.

Mizuno represents House District 29, which includes Kamehameha Heights, Kalihi Valley, and a portion of Kalihi.
