HONOLULU CITY COUNCIL RESPONDS TO MAYOR’S BUDGET AND PREPARES FOR BUDGET BRIEFINGS
(HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I) – The Honolulu City Council received Mayor Blangiardi’s budget late on Thursday, March 2, and is in review of the proposed operating budget of $3.41 billion and the proposed FY24 Capital Program and Budget (CIP), which is approximately $1.09 billion.
Under Section 3-112 of the Revised Charter of Honolulu, the Council is charged with the duty to pass a balanced budget. Thus, the Council will be hearing from the Blangiardi Administration, including all departments, to get more detailed information and ask questions.
“I appreciate all of the hard work the Administration has put into the proposed budget,” said Council Chair Tommy Waters. “With rising housing costs and increased prices of everyday essentials, it is imperative that we take a close look at these bills to ensure we are providing relief and essential services for our local residents. This budget will also be a great opportunity to prioritize filling vacancies so we can provide the necessary services. I will be focused on ensuring that this budget prioritizes our need for affordable housing, increased public safety, and measures to protect against the effects of climate change.”
“Mahalo to the Administration for submitting a proposed balanced budget. I look forward to the Council’s careful review and deliberations during the upcoming budget approval process,” said Budget Chair Radiant Cordero. “With the increased property tax assessments and longstanding City-wide issues that need to be addressed, we must consider long-term solutions to not only provide relief to taxpayers but also prioritize our city infrastructure and services — all while adopting a balanced budget. I encourage our neighbors to tune in during the Budget Briefings and share their manaʻo to help shape the way our city moves forward.”
