Council to hold Special Zoning and Planning Meeting on Aug. 31

Councilmember Brandon Elefante invites the public to a Community Zoning and Planning Meeting to share mana‘o on measures relating to transit-oriented development and rezoning of land in the ‘Aiea, Pearl City and Waipahū communities. This special meeting provides area residents an opportunity to provide direct input on the proposed changes in Bill 49 and Bill 50.

WHAT: Community Zoning and Planning Committee Meeting to discuss Bill 49 and Bill 50

●  Bill 49 (2022) relates to the ‘Aiea-Pearl City Neighborhood TOD Plan, which seeks to establish a TOD Special District surrounding area rail stations to encourage appropriate transit-oriented development, including housing. Maps reflecting the neighborhoods involved are attached to the linked legislation.

●  Bill 50 (2022) seeks to rezone Land Situated in Hālawa – Pearl City and Waipahū, near Leeward Community College; near the intersection of Kamehameha and Farrington Highways and near the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Ka‘ōnohi Street, as reflected on the maps attached to the linked bill.

“An informed community is a strong community and these bills contain significant changes that pave the path to a future with more housing, local business opportunities and easier commutes for transit users,” said Councilmember Elefante. “By holding the meeting in the community, we bring the Council process to our neighborhoods, so that residents can directly participate in the decision-making process that will affect the areas where they live, work and play.”

The Council’s Zoning and Planning Committee will take up both bills for decision-making on forwarding the bill to the full Council for second reading and public hearing on September 7, 2022. Area residents and any interested members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend. Media coverage is welcomed.
